Bryophytes are all embryophytes ('land plants') that are non-vascular: they have tissues and enclosed reproductive systems, but they lack vascular tissue that circulates liquids. They neither have flowers nor produce seeds, reproducing via spores. The term bryophyte comes from Greek βρύον - bryon, "tree-moss, oyster-green" + φυτόν - fyton "plant".

What is the difference between bryophyte and hygrophyte?
Q. I know the MSN encarta dictionary says hygrophyte = hydrophyte. But this isnt true. Can some one explain it to me?

A. The bryophytes are a sub-group of plants, the phylum Bryophyta. A hydrophyte on the other hand is a plant adapted to living in or on water. It is more of a description than a grouping. However these plants belong to a different subgroup from the bryophytes. One way to imaging this is with road vehicles (plants). On one division there are motocycles(bryophytes, all of them). On another division are the cars(plants that are not bryophytes). Now there are many more sub groups within the cars, Hondas, Toyotas, Fords, Aston Martins... ... Some of these cars can be described as sports cars (hydrophytes). Not all Fords or Hondas are sports cars, but a honda and a ford may both belong to the same description of sports car. Sports cars and… [cont.]

what is a bryophyte and where do they live?
Q. what is a bryophyte and where do they live?

A. Bryophytes are mosses, liverworts and hornworts, they reproduce by spores and don't aren't vascular meaning they do not have circulation of liquids or phloem or xylems. They are usually found on land near water or in moist areas because their spores travel by water.

Are the life cycles of Gymnosperms and Bryophytes the same?
Q. I understand that they have different structures, in gymosperms sporophyte is dominate, and in bryophytes the gametophyte is dominant. I want to know if they have the same steps when reproducing, or if there are major differences. for Bryophytes i have: spores-mitosis-gametophyt e-mitosis-gametes-fertali zation-zygote -mitosis-embryo-mitosis-s porophyte-and back to spores
