Bryophytes are all embryophytes ('land plants') that are non-vascular: they have tissues and enclosed reproductive systems, but they lack vascular tissue that circulates liquids. They neither have flowers nor produce seeds, reproducing via spores. The term bryophyte comes from Greek βρύον - bryon, "tree-moss, oyster-green" + φυτόν - fyton "plant". Q. How are the environmental agents for uniting sperm and egg different in pines and bryophytes? Asked by mary_angelgirl - Mon Feb 18 11:19:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Bryophytes are the only plant group in which the dominant form (the familiar moss plant) is a haploid gametophyte. Water is required in order for the flagellated sperm to reach the egg. The sporophyte is tiny and attached to the moss plant. Water is required in order for spores to germinate and form a new gametophyte moss plant. The familiar seed plant is diploid and spores germinate within the sporangia to form gametophytes. This results in the female gametophyte being protected and nourished by the seed plant. Water is not required for spore germination or for fertilisation. Answered by horsinaround2218 - Mon Feb 18 11:43:22 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Bryophyte" Home and garden calendar
