Neuropsychiatry is the branch of medicine dealing with mental disorders attributable to diseases of the nervous system. It preceded the current disciplines of psychiatry and neurology, inasmuch as psychiatrists and neurologists had a common training (Yudofsky and Hales, 2002). However, neurology and psychiatry subsequently split apart and are typically practiced separately. Nevertheless, neuropsychiatry has become a growing subspecialty of psychiatry and it is also closely related to the field of behavioral neurology, which is a subspecialty of neurology that addresses clinical problems of cognition and/or behavior caused by brain injury or brain disease. "Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry" fellowships are jointly accredited through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS), in a manner similar to how the specialties of psychiatry and neurology in the United States have a joint board for accreditation, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). GNU Free Documentation License What exactly is a neuropsychiatrist? Q. I am a high school student and I am interested in pursuing either neurology or psychiatry after college. I know that they are extremely different, but what does working in nueropsychiatry entail? Also, do they have the same qualifications as both a neurologist and a psychiatrist (i.e., they could work as either of the two in a hospital or practice)? And lastly, what is an average or common salary for someone specializing in neuropsychiatry? Asked by ksween77 - Sun Jan 18 18:19:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Which are the neurotransmitters affected? Does this drug help in withdrawal symptoms of SSRIs? Detailed information of Diphenhydramine related with Neuropsychiatry will be appreciated. Please give me web addresses that give information related to this Asked by Ajeesh - Wed Oct 4 06:19:00 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. In the 1960s it was found that diphenhydramine inhibits reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This discovery led to a search for viable antidepressants with similar structures and fewer side effects, culminating in the invention of fluoxetine (Prozac), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). A similar search had previously led to the synthesis of the first SSRI zimelidine from chlorpheniramine, also an antihistamine. Q. Cognitive neuropsychiatry tries to show that delusional beliefs are attempts to explain pathologial experiences. I'm not saying the religious figures were delusional, but if they hypothetically were, what mental disorders would they likely have suffered from? Eg. Buddha - gratulant feelings of transcendence & beautitude = Psychomotor epilepsy. St. Paul & the writer of Revelations - sees stars and Jesus appearing before him = visual migrane. Possessed by demons - twitching and grimacing = Huntington's disease. Moses - hearing voices in his head = schitzophrenia Mohammed - hearing voices, physical symptoms when receiving revelations = epilepsy Asked by Smiling - Wed Oct 15 01:30:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. well, your gues is as good as mine.
