A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioural pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture. The recognition and understanding of mental health conditions has changed over time and across cultures, and there are still variations in the definition, assessment, and classification of mental disorders, although standard guideline criteria are widely accepted. Over a third of people in most countries report meeting criteria for the major categories at some point in their life. The causes are often explained in terms of a diathesis-stress model and biopsychosocial model. Services are based in psychiatric hospitals or in the community, and mental health professionals diagnose individuals by various methods, often relying on observation and questioning in interview. Psychotherapy and psychiatric medication are two major treatment options as are social interventions, peer support and self-help. In some cases there may be involuntary detention and involuntary treatment where legislation allows. Stigma and discrimination add to the suffering associated with the disorders, and various social movements campaign for change.

how do you deal with an undiagnosed mental illness in family?
Q. What can someone do to deal with a 62 year old family member whom is obviously suffering from an mental illness, but refuses to get help, or acknowledge it? He self medicates with alcohol and prescription drugs. He alienates/can't get along with others, his only friend is the TV, has drastic mood swings and disorganized/illogical thinking. Is there a professional out there that can give me some tips? Thank you for your really great answers. Unfortunately the doctor he does see is a pill pusher. How do you think he gets those prescription meds. He won't go to another dr. because he likes getting the drugs and the brush off!!

A. Sometimes those in our families need help and they blame everyone else around them instead of looking at themselves. These people make others need to go for therapy because they refuse to look in the mirror. If you cannot get them to seek the help they are in need of, go talk to someone so that you can learn the best way to cope with them. These people drain the energy out of those closest to them. Get the help you need so you can deal with this situation. Best Wishes

What is a common mental illness besides depression that may cause suicide?
Q. It doesn't have to be common, I just need to know the name for a mental illness that mainly causes thoughts of suicide, besides depression, though.

A. Bipolar Disorder is the number one killer by way of suicide. More bipolars commit suicide than any other group of people and more of them succeed than any other group. Being in a mixed state puts a bipolar at the highest risk of suicide though, not a depressive period.

If you have a mental illness, can you still get your degree in psychology?
Q. I had planned to go into the field of psychology, but recently I've been told that if you suffer from a mental illness, you can't. I suffer from manic bi-polar and depression, and minor schizophrenia. I also heard that if you get your psychologist to put on your record that the diagnosis is reverse, you can still get the opportunity to get the degree in that field. Is this true?
