What wall and window treatment colors should we choose in a room with a dark blue carpet?
Q. Our condo contains a great room (a combined living and dining room), and we currently have a dark blue carpet throughout the room. We would like to paint the living room one color, paint the dining room another color, and also choose a window treatment color for the windows in the dining room. Our initial ideas are silver-blue paint in the living room, brown or tan paint in the dining room, and cranberry window treatments. We'd appreciate any additional input people more experienced with this type of thing could provide. Thanks.

A. I like your ideas. You could also paint the living room or dining room walls white to give the illusion of a bigger room if yours are small. If your funiture is a solid color as well, think about floral or patterned curtains/drapes to break up the solid color scheme. My living room has green carpet, furniture is green stripe and curtains are light green but the drapes are green and gold brocade(there's gold stripes in the furniture).

What is a truly effective treatment for adult acne?
Q. I have had acne since my late teenage years, I am now 27. Very tired of looking at it. I've tried proactiv, and all sorts of over the counter treatments, and I hate taking oral medications for fear of side effects. Is there a non-invasive approach to dealing with acne? Is an antibiotic treatment regimen really helpful or will it just be a waste of my time and only make me more bacteria-resistant?

A. Sorry to hear that you have such serious problems with acne. It's not fun. I've been there. First of all you need to forget medicines and antibiotics. They only offer a temporary relief and often cause more harm than good. The same goes with most of the OTC treatments. The good news is that acne is relatively simple to fix - once you know what causes it and how to deal with it. First you need to understand what causes acne. If you said bacteria and sebum you are 90% wrong. Yes, they are part of the equation, but only a small part. Focusing on them will not get you clear - as I'm sure you know. Acne is a complicated condition and it doesn't have a single cause. To explain it in detail would take too much space here. So I'll just give… [cont.]

What is the treatment for a fractured rib?
Q. I was in an accident and am going to the doctor tomorrow. Generally, speaking what is the treatment? Will I be out of work?

A. There is nothing you can do for a fractured rib other than medicate the pain. Doctors no longer rap up ribcages to support broken ribs because it restricts your breathing and can lead to pneumonia. Unless you work is physically demanding, you will probably not miss any job time.
